Adults affected by autism

Current LINk activity

LINk is part of a local autism working group looking at how things might move forward. We want to speak with people affected by autism to hear their experiences and their ideas about how the lives of adults with autism could be improved.
- What's working well for you?
- What could be better?

We are going to groups attended by people with autism and carers to hear their experiences and what they have to say about the strategy. We met a group at the Carers' Centre on 13 October and some students from the autism specific course at TyneMet College on 23 November.

Background

The LINk board decided to use some of LINk’s resources to support people with autism and their care partners to become more involved with the local implementation of ‘fulfilling and rewarding lives’ – a strategy for adults with autism.

‘Implementing Fulfilling and Rewarding Lives’ statutory guidance summarises the areas to be developed:

  • To increase the understanding of autism amongst staff
  • To strengthen diagnosis and assessment of needs of people affected by autism
  • To continue to improve transition planning and support for young people with autism
  • To ensure adults affected by autism are included in local service planning

The local autism working group will support the implementation of the National Autism Strategy in North Tyneside. North Tyneside Council, NHS trusts and local organisations, including North Tyneside LINk, are represented on the group.
