Living Well with Dementia: A National Dementia Strategy was launched in February 2009. With the support of the Alzheimer's Society, LINk invited staff from local voluntary and community sector organisations to get together to discuss the strategy and the impact it could have locally.
The Dementia Commissioning Pack launched nationally in July 2011 provides commissioners with a range of service specifications, tools and templates to help deliver change. It sets a standard of what good, integrated dementia care should look like for commissioners, providers, people with dementia and carers alike
Current LINk activity
Since this initial meeting LINk has been invited to attend the NHS North of Tyne Dementia Project Review Board. The Board has been benchmarking local services using a regional tool as well as consulting with service users and carers to gather their experiences. Now this work has been completed, the Board has developed both North of Tyne and local action plans. These joint PCT and local authority plans address each objective of the National Dementia Strategy.
North Tyneside's joint action plan was updated in February 2011 and it is likely that a 'task and finish' group will be set up to map out the dementia pathway and address any outstanding actions in the plan.
Key achievements in the borough over the past year include:
- New day opportunities, which provides extended opening hours and additional provision of care at weekends.
- The introduction of a Reablement Service, which has meant that people with dementia can be rehabilitated in their own home.
- A dementia training course for frontline adult social care staff has been introduced. It is set to be extended to housing staff and the Tyne and Wear Care Alliance.
- A Dementia Adviser service is helping people get the support they need at an earlier stage
